For the first time ever, more than 50,000 homeless New Yorkers are sleeping each night in municipal shelters, including 21,000 children – a shocking 61 percent increase since Mayor Bloomberg took office.
In 2005, Mayor Bloomberg reversed the proven strategy of utilizing federal housing resources – used successfully by Mayors Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani – and then went on to eliminate ANY pathway to permanent housing for homeless families. For the first time since modern homelessness emerged, New York City has no program to help homeless families with vulnerable children move into permanent housing.
Sign this petition and let Mayor Bloomberg know that you will not wait for the next mayor to help these families find a home. Enough is enough.
